Got anything neat on the go? Share it!

We’re looking for unique and cool projects that you’ve been doing as part of your job or in your spare time. In the Coffee and Code group we have hardware hackers, programmers, graphic artists, musicians, and more. There has got to be something cool that you’ve been working on or even something in the planning stages!

Show your stuff and compete!

In Europe, the Demoscene has been going strong for almost 20 years. It’s high time we enjoyed some of that fun over here in Canada. The Demoscene is a subculture of geeks that create beautiful artwork and real-time graphics demos on impossible hardware. Sometimes, they compete amongst each other for bragging rights and other prizes, like at Assembly (the world’s largest LAN party.)

Read up on the Demoscene. If you’re a geek, an interest in something this cool comes by default.

Where and When

This Thursday (May 27) at The Albion in Guelph, Ontario at 5:00pm.

Then we want to meet you!

Come to the next Guelph Coffee and Code meetup at Coco Latte in the Old Quebec St. Mall in downtown Guelph at 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, April 29th to get together with other developers and designers in the area.

HTML5 is an up-and-coming technology shift for the web and we would love to hear your experiences working with it and opinions on the upcoming changes.

This will be the second meetup that uses the new 5:00-6:00 dedicated code and chat time, followed by the optional socializing time until 8:00pm. We’ve made these changes as some members have expressed difficulty with the combination of getting some code completed while also schmoozing.

Hope to see you there!

Welcome Technology Community members, I apologize for the delay in this weeks post.

Please Note: the Time and Location change in this weeks event.

To appeal to the technology hub in Downtown Guelph this weeks event will begin shortly after the work day ends. We hope that this will attract some people that have been meaning to come out, but haven’t gotten the chance to make it to an event.

To reiterate, Guelph Coffee and Code is a very relaxed environment in which you can show up when you please, and leave when you wish. We enjoy the flexibility of this model as we like to encourage community building through networking, but also try to promote the ability to work on projects [Community based, or Personal]. We are also a great resource of help, just incase you are stuck on some code.

This week come out to work or relax with some like minded individuals. Cory is hoping to show off some of the Open Data Applications and Feeds that he has come across. If you want to gather some resources on Open Data check out the Focused twitter account @OpenGuelph.

Without further ado….

Venue: Coco Latte
Address: 55 Wyndham Street N. Guelph, Ontario
The movement began with creating a social presence on Twitter, under the username @OpenGuelph which provided a channel to tweet the benefits that OpenData could bring.

From there Cory went on to respond to a recent blog entry “Let’s Talk – about Guelph” by Honourable Mayor Karen Farbridge.

The City of Guelph informed Cory that they are currently working on an Open Data plan, and are open to suggestions on what to include in their documents. Cory hopes that he will be able to sit on an advisory board to help mold the open data initiative that is underway. He will be looking to the Guelph Coffee & Code members for their suggestions and ideas.

With Cory’s background in Microsoft’s Cloud Computing Platform, Windows Azure, and the recent release of the Open Data Protocol, he hopes that he will be a great asset to the City in their task.

Once the City releases the data publicly, Guelph Coffee and Code will be starting a number of projects that will consume the data using various technologies. Our goal with these projects is to enrich the Community of Guelph, while we teach new skills to our growing Information Technology sector.
