Guelph Coffee and Code: Week of Sept. 26, 2010

27 Sep

MSCERT-70536 Last week was the first discussion and code review period for the Study Group, and I am quite impressed with the results. We had a new member last week, which was a great surprise, I look forward to continuing through on our accelerated timeline.

This week we have been learning Services, Threading, Configuration, and Diagnostics. You can learn more about our progress on the Forum.

Our next meeting which takes place on September 30th we will be having a discussion on the topics listed above, feel free to join our conversation even if you aren’t part of the group. The more questions we have leads to a better discussion, and a better understanding of the topics that were covered.

Guelph Coffee and Code: Study Group Edition

23 Sep

MSCERT-70536 I hope everyone has read their chapters for the first week of the study group. There is a change of venue this week we will be at The Red Brick Cafe [8 Douglas St. Guelph Ontario] (be careful, there are 2 locations). Parking is a limited to street spots only, so you may be in for a short walk.

The Red Brick doesn’t reserve spots (I tried, it sucks), so if you are the first to arrive, try to save a spot large enough for the group.

This session will include: a discussion about the topics studied, a Code review from our first assignment, and a conversation with thoughts on timing study & next topics to be covered.

Security Vulnerability Detected in ASP.NET

21 Sep

This is a quick post to inform the users of our group that a security vulnerability was found in ASP.NET that could potentially allow a Malicious Party access to your web.config file.  As you know there are a number of settings in the web.config that would be harmful in the wrong hands, including the Connection String to a (or multiple) Database(s), Encryption Key information (Machine Key), as well as SMTP or Impersonation details which could give the Hacker access to a Windows System Account, or an Administrative Email Account.

Be sure to ready Scott Guthrie’s Post “Important: ASP.NET Security Vulnerability” which will outline the potential threats in more detail.

For a script to detect if you are Vulnerable to this attack read Microsoft Security Research and Defense entry.

There is also a newer update by the Microsoft Security Response Center which includes a twitter account [@MSFTSecResponse] which will give more up-to-date coverage as new developments unfold.

Please make sure to make your superiors aware of this threat as it affects mostly all installations/Versions of ASP.NET on a wide range of Operating Systems.
